Program Planning - Getting Started

In order to program effectively, it is important to know what your residents need and want. This can be done informally through asking around or more formally through surveys or focus groups.

Building relationships with your residents is key to having successful programs. If you know their interests and needs you will have a better idea of what programs will be successful and the best day/time to have your programs. In addition, if you have a strong connection with your residents they will be more likely to attend the programs you coordinate!

Program Goal:

After you determine your audience think about what you want your program to accomplish. This question is often forgotten when it comes to planning an event. Knowing why you are planning an event will ensure that your outcomes are met when you evaluate your program. Why is this program been planned? What purpose will this program serve with your residents?

Don’t think that each program has to have a deep educational value. Some programs may be strictly for the purpose of bringing your residents together for a night of singing and dancing. Any purpose is fine as long as you have thought your goals out in advance. Intentional programming will also ensure that you are creating a series of events that appeal to all of your residents!

Here are some program goals to get you started:

  • To bring a community together
  • To educate
  • To expose individuals to different points of view
  • To support other programs/events
  • To provide entertainment
  • To socialize

Here are a few types of programs that can help you meet your goals:

  • Lectures and speakers
  • Panel or discussion groups
  • Performances – open mic nights, musical shows or dance groups
  • Mixers or dances
  • Films
  • Lunch and dinner gatherings
  • Arts and crafts programs
  • Tournaments and gaming opportunities
  • Educational programs
  • Off-campus excursions
  • Determining your goals in advance will also help when you evaluate the programs impact and success. See the program evaluation example for information on how to assess your programs!
