Basketball Rules and Information
Equipment
Street shoes are not permitted on the gym
floors. All players must wear tennis shoes. All jewelry
must be removed before a player is allowed to participate
in the game. Game balls and timing devices will be
supplied. Each team should be wearing shirts or jerseys
of the same color (i.e., all white, all blue, etc.) with a
different number. Taped-on or pinned-on numbers
will not be acceptable. Intramural managers will have
pinnies available. When using intramural pinnies, they
MUST be worn over a shirt.
Teams
Men's and women's teams consist of five players. A game may be started with as few as four players. Co-rec teams consist of five players: three females and two males. A game may be started with as few as four players: two males and two females.
Rules
All NCAA rules will be followed in men's,
women's and co-rec teams with the following
exception:
- Team captains are the only ones allowed to
discuss a call with the officials or allowed to
approach the scorers table.
- Teams are responsible for their fans. Spectators
are asked to watch the games from the stands and
sidelines. Officials and intramural staff members
will ask for your cooperation.
- Team captains must sign the score sheet next to
the final score immediately after the game.
The winning team is responsible for checking the
official scoresheet and making sure the winning
team is circled properly.
- Each game shall consist of two "20 minutes
running" halves. The last minute of each half will
be "stop clock." The clock shall only be stopped
during the last minute of each half, in case of
injury, and in the event of an officials time-out or a team time-out.
- There will be three 20-second timeouts
a game. Time-outs may be used anytime
during the contest. Time-outs shall not exceed
20 seconds in length. The clock will continue
to run on all team times not taken during the last
minute of each half.
- Each overtime period will be three minutes
in duration. The last minute shall be stop clock.
Teams are allowed one 20-second time-out
during overtime. This can only be used during the
last minute of stop clock.
- One-and-one will be shot on the seventh team
foul. Beginning with the tenth team foul, two shots
will be awarded.
- The game will be started by the toss of a coin.
The loser of the coin toss will receive the ball at
the next jump ball situation. There will be an
alternating possession rule in effect.
- There will be a midcourt "over and back"
violation, or 10-second backcourt violation.
Three-second violations are in effect. Five-second "closely guarded" rules also are in effect.
- A team player attempting to dunk the
basketball and damaging the rim or backboard
beyond repair will forfeit their game.
- Each team must provide one scorekeeper/timekeeper. The scorekeeper/timekeeper must
report to the officials or intramural staff person
prior to the start of the game.
- All technical fouls shall count against
a player's total of five fouls for removal
from an intramural contest. All technical fouls
shall also count toward the total team fouls.
- A three-point shot will be used.
- No players may move from spaces until a free-throw attempt strikes the ring or the backboard.
Co-Rec Specifics
Substitutions are allowed on a man-for-man and woman-for-woman basis only.
Scoring: Male and female field goals
and free throws are the same point values.
There will be an alternating possession rule in
effect, regardless of the sex of the player
involved in the held-ball situation.
Playoffs
All teams that meet the criteria
will qualify for divisional playoffs:
- Does not forfeit any regular season basketball games
- Provides a minimum of two officials per game for
all games they are scheduled to officiate. Officials are
required to sign-in on the score sheet to receive credit
for officiating their assigned games. Failure to comply
may result in a team being disqualified from post-season
playoffs.
- The basketball officials' regular season
grade/evaluations from all games assigned and
worked equals a passing mark.
Protests
Only protests regarding player eligibility will be accepted by the intramural sports staff.
Forfeit Policy
Forfeit time is game time. The intramural staff person present shall declare game-time forfeits. Should a team anticipate a forfeit, they should contact Pat Kennedy at the intramural office as soon as possible.
