Eligibility, Rules, and Other Information
Eligibility
All currently enrolled Case students, faculty, and staff are eligible for sand volleyball. Each player may be listed on one roster only. Check with the intramural office for specific eligibility rules.
Equipment
Balls, clipboards, and timing devices will be supplied.
Rules
Game Length
Matches will consist of a best two out of three-game series. The first two games will be played to 21 rally scored. If a third match is required, it will be played to 15 rally scored.
Start of Game
Games will begin with a coin toss. The team that wins the toss will get a choice of first serve or the side of the net to defend. Teams will switch sides and first possession for the second game. In the case of a third set, another coin toss will occur. Teams will switch sides in the third set only after a team has scored eight points.
Games will be played under USA Volleyball Sand Volleyball Rules
The following are highlights of these rules:
- Player Positions
- At the time of service all players must be inside the boundaries of the court.
- Players do not have to play in set positions or rotate.
- Players must maintain the same service order throughout the match.
- If a player is substituted for, he/she must return to the same spot in the service order.
- Service
- A legal serve will take place from behind the team's end line anywhere inside the sidelines.
- A serving player must remain behind the end line until the ball has been served. If a player serves in the air, he/she can land on or inside the line.
- A legal serve must cross the net between the antennas; a legal serve can touch the net on the way over.
- Play at Net
- Ball must cross over net between the antennae; a ball hitting the antennae is out of bounds.
- Player contact with the net or antennae are prohibited.
- In blocking, a player may touch the ball beyond the net provided that he/she does not interfere with opponent's play.
- A player may cross under the net provided it does not interfere with opponent’s play.
Divisions
- Co-Rec Division (minimum of 8 teams required)
Teams
A team consists of four players: two males and two females. A game may be started with as few as three players: three males and one female.
Protests
Only protests regarding player eligibility will be accepted by the intramural sports staff.
Forfeit Policy
Forfeit time is game time. The intramural staff person present shall declare game time forfeits. Should a team anticipate a forfeit, they should contact Pat Kennedy at the intramural office as soon as possible.
