Conduct and Sportsmanship
A major emphasis of the philosophy of the intramural program is good sportsmanship.
Sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of every contest. In order to encourage proper
conduct during activities, officials, supervisors, and administrative personnel shall
make decisions on warning, penalizing, or ejecting teams or players for
poor sportsmanship. These decisions are final. In the event of an ejection or penalty
imposed on a team or player(s), the team or player(s) will be ineligible to participate
in the intramural program until they have submitted in writing the course of events
that led to their penalty and discussed the incident with the
appropriate intramural administrative staff. The following are guidelines
which may be considered as evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct:
- Profanity
- Unnecessary delay of game
- Striking or shoving an opponent (automatic ejection from game)
- Arguing with officials (discussion is allowed as long as it is done in a mature manner by the manager)
- Derogatory and abusive remarks toward an opponent
- Any action which shows disregard for the rules or policies of the intramural sports program
- Any action which shows disregard for facilities and equipment of the Physical Education &
Athletics department
Conduct toward officials (by players, coaches, or spectators)
Abusive Conduct
Violation: Abusive conduct toward an official or supervisor resulting in an ejection from the game.
Penalty: Automatic probation for remainder of sports season, ineligibility for the team's next contest.
Shoving, Striking, or Verbal Abuse
Violation: Shoving, striking, or physically or verbally abusing an official or supervisor.
Penalty: Automatic suspension from all intramural activities for at least one full
calendar year. A team captain is responsible for the actions of any individual
member of the team and for the spectators directly related to the team. The
conduct of the players and spectators before and after the game is as important
as the conduct during the game, and organizations will be held
responsible for conduct at these times as well as during the game. Other
appropriate action may be taken depending upon the severity of the infraction.
Team and Individual Conduct
The following are possible consequences of unsportsmanlike conduct of
intramural teams and participants. This is not exclusive of other action.
1. Team Violations
Intramural Probation
Places a team on probationary status which would cause a suspension
from intramural participation for any further
unsportsmanlike conduct. The term probation may be set
for a particular sport, for a semester, year, or indefinite period.
Suspension
Prohibits the suspended organization and its individuals from
participating in any team or meet sports during the period of
intramural suspension. A period of suspension is automatically
followed by a period of intramural probation of not
less than one full year.
2. Individual Violations
The disciplinary measures that may be taken in a case of individual unsportsmanlike conduct include those
measures listed above for a team.
Penalty
Any player ejected from an intramural contest for unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant abuse of an
opponent is automatically suspended from the next game his/her team plays. This person is also
subject to further disciplinary action.
