The Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Award
The Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Award was created in 2010 to honor Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, a Case alum who embodied the spirit of community and Spartan pride. Tubbs-Jones, the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives, died suddenly in 2008 at the age of 58.
The award in her honor was established to recognize an underrepresented, undergraduate CWRU student for significant contributions to campus life, scholarship and community service. These three characteristics were best demonstrated by Ms. Tubbs-Jones, who was actively involved at Case and the nearby community.
The award proves to be a fitting tribute to Tubbs-Jones, who was honored during Homecoming 2009 when a new 5K Race and Wellness Expo was added to the schedule of weekend events. Tubbs-Jones served as the Homecoming parade grand marshal in 2001 and was active in the Homecoming weekend celebration. Born in Cleveland in 1949, she earned a Social Work degree from Case in 1971 and graduated from the CWRU School of Law in 1974.
