Tips for Using the Alumni Career Network
When using the Alumni Career Network, please adhere to the following guidelines which will create a positive networking environment for all involved.
DO:
- Initiate contact in a respectful way. Make an introductory phone call or send an introductory e-mail as your first method of contact. Be sure to identify yourself as a Case alumnus or student, and reference the Alumni Career Network as your means of obtaining their contact information.
- Be respectful of the volunteer's time. Ask for their preferences regarding method and frequency of contact.
- Find a time that is convenient for them to engage in a followup phone call or e-mail session. Ask them how much time they will have to speak with you.
- Prepare! Know how to structure an informational interview and have a list of questions ready. This will ensure the best use of your time, and the volunteer's time.
- Contact volunteers to ask for information about their occupation or what it is like to work in their industry.
- Contact volunteers if you are relocating to a specific city and have questions about the job market there.
- Be courteous, positive, and appreciative of the time the volunteer is able to spend with you.
- Send a thank you note to the volunteer after your phone call/e-mail session.
DON'T:
- Contact a volunteer to ask for a job.
- Use any of the contact information provided in the Alumni Career Network for purposes of unsolicited e-mail, phone calls, or postal mail.
- Use the Alumni Career Network as a means of advertising your business or services.
- Repeatedly contact a volunteer who indicates that they can no longer be of assistance to you.
