Academic Year Fellows Program
The Civic Engagement Fellows Program academic year cohort engages eight first-year Case students to provide the foundation for ongoing involvement in the Cleveland community.
At the start of spring semester (January 2010), the program will kick off with a retreat that includes a program orientation, development of individual learning plans, various community service topics, and team building.
Eligibility and Compensation
To apply for the Academic Year program, you must be a first-year Case Western Reserve University undergraduate student enrolled for the spring 2010 semester. Fellows will receive a stipend of $9.20/hour for their service and training of approximately 4 to 6 hours per week.
Civic Engagement Fellows Service Sites
Student fellows are matched with service opportunities in the areas of youth tutoring and mentoring, community development, hunger issues, etc. Each fellow will serve 4 to 6 hours per week at one of CCEL's established community sites, based on the student’s interest, site availability, and scheduling.
The 2009 Academic Year Fellows served at Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, Cleveland Reads & Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the Cleveland Foodbank, Cuyahoga Community Land Trust,
East End Neighborhood House, Esperanza, Inc., Famicos Foundation, and Open Doors Academy.
During the semester, fellows will also serve in a leadership role on campus by recruiting other Case students to participate in community service activities. The semester will culminate with the academic year fellows planning, facilitating, and leading a campus-wide Saturday of Service event open to all Case students, faculty, and staff.
Civic Engagement Fellows Seminar
Throughout the semester students will meet as a team for fellowship seminars, which include reflection, community, and sense-of-place activities, job readiness training, and guest speakers.
Each student will choose a relevant community topic of personal interest, make a short presentation, and lead a discussion on that particular issue during the seminar.
As part of the seminar series, fellows will explore options for maintaining their involvement in the community and service beyond their fellowship term.
Application and Additional Information
First year undergraduate students interested in the Civic Engagement Academic Year Fellows Program should complete an online application. In addition, applicants must submit a schedule reflecting their proposed Spring Semester classes and commitments. CCEL understands that this schedule is subject to change, but it helps provide a general overview of the applicant's availability. Completed schedules can be emailed to Angela Lowery. The deadline to apply is Monday, November 23, 2009.
