Summer Programs
The Center for Civic Engagement & Learning hosts summer service programs that enable Case Western Reserve University students to participate in summer job experiences that also make a difference in the community. Programs vary from year to year, depending on the availability of grant funding. Below are descriptions of several of the summer programs CCEL has sponsored.
The Summer Literacy Corps
The Summer Literacy Corps (SLC), funded through the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, is an exciting opportunity for Case students to get involved in the community during the summer to help local youth improve their reading and academic skills.
SLC team members serve at program sites throughout the city including Cleveland Public Library and East Cleveland Public Library branches, the BRIDGES Program, Mary B. Martin Elementary School, John Hay High School, Cleveland Public Theater, Young Audiences, and the National Youth Sports Program.
The Summer Literacy Corps is a terrific way for Case students to make a difference in children's lives, learn about Cleveland, and enjoy a great summer job!

The Civic Engagement Fellows Program
The Civic Engagement Fellows Program, made possible through generous support of the John P. Murphy Foundation, provided an intensive, full-time summer service learning opportunity, along with continuing service through the academic year, for six Case Western Reserve University undergraduates. Students worked with Cleveland area non-profit organizations while learning about sense of place and community issues.
Fellows in 2006 served at A Cultural Exchange, Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, Environmental Health Watch, Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland, and Senior Outreach Services, Inc.
Each fellow developed a final fellowship project that explored a particular community-related issue in Cleveland. They are pictured here at the presentation of their final projects.
CASE AMERICORPS PROGRAM
During 1996-2005, the office hosted an AmeriCorps program, providing students with intense community service opportunities. AmeriCorps members designed and taught lessons in the areas of health, technology, arts, literacy, and environmental education at local community centers, libraries, and schools.
Through this National Service program, more than 175 Case students contributed tens of thousands of hours to the Greater Cleveland community, taught thousands of urban children, and partnered with over 50 local community organizations.
While CCEL has reached the time limit set by the Corporation for National and Community Service for hosting an AmeriCorps program, we remain grateful for the funding that provided such unique service opportunities for Case students and community partners.
AmeriCorps, often referred to as the "domestic Peace Corps," has programs throughout the United States. The program connects more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country's critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.
