Sexual Assault Awareness Month

by Katie Hanna, Flora Stone Mather Center for Women

By now, most of you have probably memorized the bathroom posters telling you that "...you might be tested on this tonight." What the posters won't tell you is that April is recognized every year as Sexual Assault Awareness Month by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month raises awareness of sexual violence and its prevention through special events. It also highlights sexual violence as a major public health issue and reinforces the need for prevention efforts.

The Case Western Reserve University community has an opportunity to participate in a number of events sponsored by the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women this April. The center is located at 309 Thwing Center.

Rape Aggression Defense Classes

Women are encouraged to take Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) classes this April, provided for free by the Case Police Department. Classes begin Sunday, April 6, and continue for the following two Sundays, from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Wade Commons Fireside Lounge. Class size is limited, so be sure to sign up by e-mailing Beth Mandl.

The Clothesline Project

From April 21 through April 25, the Clothesline Project will be held in Thwing Center Atrium. The Clothesline Project honors women survivors as well as victims of intimate violence. Any woman who has experienced such violence, at any time in her life, is encouraged to come forward and design a shirt. Victim's families and friends are also invited to participate. The project serves as an educational tool for those who come to view the clothesline, and it becomes a healing tool for anyone who makes a shirt. By hanging a shirt on the line, survivors, friends, and family can literally turn their back on some of the pain of their experience and walk away; finally, it allows those who are still suffering in silence to understand that they are not alone.

Supporting Survivors

On April 22, the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center will offer a workshop on Supporting Survivors at 8 p.m. in the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) also lists some important tips on helping a loved one after a sexual assault.

Take Back The Night

On April 24, the annual Take Back the Night rally and march will take place. Join us at 9 p.m. in the Thwing Center Atrium as we join together to break the silence and become part of the solution in ending sexual violence.

Check out the Sexual Conduct at Case website for more information about risk reduction, reporting, legal rights, and how to help a friend. Resources for survivors are available at Case Western Reserve University and within the Cleveland community.

If you have any questions about upcoming events or how you can increase your awareness and end sexual violence, please e-mail Katie Hanna, Women's Health Advocate, at the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women.
