Happy Finals Edition!
  • In This Issue ... This month's issue contains articles from past years that are related to finals time and the holiday break. They are being presented again to offer students some valuable tips for managing this hectic and stressful time of the school year. We have included articles on negotiating the visit back home, managing the pressure of finals week, and keeping test anxiety to a minimum. We hope you find them helpful.
  • Got Meds? If you are taking medication prescribed by a physician at University Health Services or University Counseling Services, make sure that you have enough refills to last you through the holiday break. If you need refills before you go home, call UHS or UCS to make arrangements to get them. If your medications are prescribed by your physician back home, have your prescriptions filled for the months ahead — enough to last you for the semester or until your next planned visit home, if possible.

If you would like to see an article (or even help write one) on a particular topic of interest in upcoming editions, please let us know. We value your input.

Going Home for the Holidays
Home for the Holidays

by William Hale, Ph.D., UCS/CBH

In his novel about returning to his childhood hometown, Thomas Wolfe said "You Can't Go Home Again," but he was wrong about that. Yes you can go home again; you do and you will. It is just different and it can be a surrealistic experience.

Your family has adjusted to your not being there, and so have you. If you are a first-year student this year, you might be going home for the first time since you arrived.

  • Have you gotten accustomed to staying up until 4 or 5 a.m. with nobody telling you when to go to bed?
  • Are you now used to coming and going as you please, without being asked where you are going, when you are coming back, and who you will be with?
  • Is your room a comfortable mess, just the way you like it? Are you glad you're not being nagged about cleaning up?   More
