ESS Tutoring Programs

Peer tutoring

Peer tutors are your fellow students who are trained to work with you on an individual and/or small group basis. Here are some things you can accomplish by working with a peer tutor:

  • Clarify course content and assignments
  • Connect class notes and readings
  • Practice problem solving

Peer tutors can help you reinforce what you already know, model new ways of learning, monitor your progress over several sessions, and help you get ready to go to the professor with specific questions. Peer tutors have been trained to work with you in ways that your professor may not be able to do in class.

Group tutoring

Students working together in an SI session

ESS Group Tutoring provides regularly scheduled student-facilitated, small-group study sessions for select undergraduate courses at Case Western Reserve University. Group tutoring sessions are free and your participation is completely voluntary. Attending sessions allows you to ask questions, review notes, practice problems and prepare for exams in a relaxed environment.

Sessions are led by peer tutors who have successfully completed the courses, are recommended by professors, and trained by ESS. During the sessions, tutors will reinforce material recently covered in lecture as assigned by the course professor(s). The goal is to involve students with the course material and introduce good study skills and habits. Make sure you bring your book, notes, and any other material you may need to use as a resource.

Want to be a Peer Tutor?

If you are interested in joining the ESS Tutoring Team, please read the Peer Tutor Position Description, complete the Peer Tutor application, and obtain a faculty recommendation. After you turn in your completed application, you may be called to schedule a brief interview, depending on the demand of tutoring requests in your specialty areas. Otherwise, your application will be kept on file for future needs.
