ESS Peer Tutoring

Peer tutors are your fellow students who have been nominated by your professors and trained by Educational Services for Students (ESS) to work with you on an individual and/or group basis regarding undergraduate courses at Case Western Reserve University. We tutor because we have done well in courses you are now taking. Just as important, we enjoy helping you discover what you are already doing well, and where you might make adjustments.

What We Do

Here are some things you can accomplish by working with one of us:

ESS Peer Tutors
  • Clarify course content and assignments
  • Connect class notes and readings
  • Practice problem solving

Peer tutors can help you reinforce what you already know, model new ways of learning, monitor your progress over several sessions, and help you get ready to go to the professor with specific questions. Peer tutors have been trained to work with you in ways that your professor may not be able to do in class.

Courses We Tutor

Attention Faculty: If your undergraduate course is not listed above, contact James Eller, ESS Associate Director for Academic Resources, at 216.368.5230 to learn how ESS can help make tutoring available for your course.

Each peer tutor is available for a minimum of seven hours of tutoring each week. We schedule our hours and locations in TutorTrac, so you have easy access to sign up for an appointment. Appointments are available seven days a week generally from as early as 10 a.m. to as late as 10 p.m.

We tutor in multiple locations throughout campus including:

  • Kelvin Smith Library
  • Sears 464 (PDELC)

How Can I Become a Peer Tutor?

If you are interested in joining the peer tutoring team, please read the Peer Tutor Position Description, complete the Peer Tutor application, and obtain a faculty recommendation. After you turn in your completed application, you may be called to schedule a brief interview, depending on the demand of tutoring requests in your specialty areas. Otherwise, your application will be kept on file for future needs.
