RESEARCH PROGRAMS Chia Field Trials

Determine whether chia, Salvia hispanica, can be used as a viable cover crop and pollinator resource and whether this once important food source can be reintroduced to various parts of the world. Information on chia and the field trial can be found on the USDA website.

The nutrition department is studying the effects of a garden-based nutritional intervention on children's knowledge of vegetables.

- Biocontrols: Effect of biocontrols on pest populations
- Soil Study: Nutrients retention, microorganisms on topsoil, soil water retention (SPUR, BIOL 388, BIOL 399)
- Study on cover crops using native forbs species. This study is in collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico (SPUR)

An environmental economics class is preparing a crop yield analysis for the 2010 growing season.

School of Engineering

- Engineers Without Borders (EWB) CWRU chapter is currently working on an irrigation project
- Civil Engineering: a high tunnel house railing system design on the farm.

COMMUNITY OUTREARCH PROGRAMS

Local High School Interns: Several local schools students are working at the Farm doing senior
projects or summer projects. For the last two years the Farm hosted students from Hawken and University Schools.

Local Schools Visitation Program: . Local schools visit the farm to learn about local food production including
composts, biocontrols and honey production
