Awareness Programs

Greek III

Greek III is an event in which the Greek community invites an educational speaker to discuss a topic of interest pertinent to Case students, staff, and faculty. Previous topics include Dating and Relationships, Risk Management, and Leadership.

SMARRT Program

The Greek community at Case is concerned about the use and abuse of alcohol as well as other important social issues. As a result, the Greeks have opted to follow risk management policies that support responsible behavior. All new members are required to attend a session on the risk management policy and liability. The chapters monitor the enforcement of the policies with the assistance of national offices and the university. Also, members are encouraged to attend at least one educational session a semester as part of the Greek Educational Workshops and Seminars Program, a series of three educational programs offered each semester.

Students at Greek Meet & Greet

Greek Meet & Greet

Almost one-third of students on campus are actively involved in Greek organizations. From scholarship activities to philanthropy, Greek Life offers endless opportunities to meet new people, get involved, and have fun on campus. Greek Meet & Greets are an opportunity for non-Greeks to meet Greeks and find out what it's like to be a part of the community.

New Member Events

The new member event is held once every semester for all newly initiated members. The purpose of this event is to create a strong sense of community among the members of various chapters and to provide them with the information they need to be active participants on campus.

Hazing Awareness Week

Hazing is defined as any mental or physical requirement, request, or obligation placed upon any member or prospective member of an organization (team, group, Greek, etc.) by other members of that organization (team, group, Greek, etc.) that causes or creates a substantial risk of: discomfort, pain, fright, disgrace, injury, or  personal degradation or which violates any federal, state, local statute or University policy. The Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils of Case Western Reserve University supports the definition and position of hazing and pre-initiation activities presented by FIPG, Inc. and the Case Western Reserve University policy as stated in the most recent version of the Student Services Guide.

In 2006, the Interfraternity Council worked closely with the Panhellenic Council to schedule events during National Hazing Prevention Week, which took place the last week of September. As part of the activities, both councils held a joint Hazing Awareness banner contest. Banners were copied and displayed in each of the Greek houses on campus, and winners received Chipotle burritos for their creative efforts.

Drawing inspiration from the winning banner this year, the councils sponsored a "BAND-AID Day" during National Hazing Prevention Week. Campus members were invited to wear a BAND-AID in the same manner that many wear ribbons to promote various causes. The bandages signified that bruises and scars from hazing have a lasting impact.

The event was widely promoted to Case administrators, faculty, staff and students. In addition, the Case athletic director and varsity athletic coaches were invited to have their teams participate in the event. Signs were hung around campus, and bandages were handed out throughout the day to make the event a campus wide success.

Good Citizens Program

If a chapter meets the following criteria:
• The chapter must plan and initiate a service project at an off-campus location. This project must be pre-approved by the IFC VP of Service.
• The chapter may advertise the project and invite non-Greek students
• At least 50% of all participants must be chapter members, with at least 4 chapter members present.
• All hours for Greek and non-Greek participants must be documented and verified with the location at which the service is being performed.

If these criteria are satisfied, the chapter will receive one service hour for each non-Greek student that participates in the event in addition to all hours performed by chapter members.

Additionally, Greeks belonging to a different chapter than the one sponsoring the event will be awarded hours for their chapter without requiring 4 members present.

Recruitment events in which service is performed do fall under the scope of the Good Citizen Program. A chapter which performs a service project during Recruitment will receive an hour for each new member that attends the event, assuming the above criteria are met.

Adopt A Program

Adopt A Program is a program where chapters can adopt community organizations and agencies and do regular community service with.  Below are the guidelines for the program.

       1. The organization that is to be adopted must first be approved by the current       VP’s of Service from IFC and PHC.
       2. A submission for approval must include the following
            a. A brief history of the organization
            b. The a reason why this organization was chosen
           c. The extent of work that would be done by the chapter when   completing  the community service hours.
           d. Contact information for the representative of the chosen organization that l             will  coordinate the effort on their side.

Upon approval the following guidelines must be met before hours may be turned in and applied towards the chapters needed hours as set by Greek Life:

1. 1/3 of the chapter must participate in the event at least once before hours can be recorded.
2. If the 1/3 goal is not met hours will be determined by a meeting with your chapter philanthropy chair, the VP’s of Service and Wes Shaub.
3. A sign in sheet should be kept with the hosting organization to keep track of the member involved, the date, and the start and finish time of the hours. A representative from the organization must initial every time a chapter member works at the event.

Submission of Hours

1. Hours should be submitted at the end of each semester.

2. Hours do not carry over to any other semester. The 1/3 guideline begins anew every semester.
