History of the Board

  • Fall 1997: Tim Dodd, Associate (then Assistant) Dean for Undergraduate Studies, convenes a group of faculty, students and administrators to discuss issues related to academic integrity.
  • The Ad Hoc Committee on Academic Integrity was comprised of 18-22 students (including a USG rep and 5 other students each year), faculty, and administrators. Faculty who served on the committee: Caroline Whitbeck, Joanne Westin, David Mathiessen, Jane Suresky, Deborah Lindell, Bill Deal (for one semester), Judy Oster, Don Friedheim.
  • Fall 1997: Spring 1999: discussion of several policy models (honor codes, administrator-driven systems, modified ethics codes), readings assigned, proposal drafts circulated for twice a month meetings.
  • Spring 1998: discuss ideas with USG
  • Spring 1999: the committee unanimously adopts a set of proposals designed to strengthen the university's understanding of the centrality of academic integrity to the scholarly enterprise and to streamline adjudication and sanctioning procedures.
  • Spring 1999: I present to USG; I am informed that they voted to support the proposal
  • Fall 1999:  proposal referred to SLSE committee
  • Fall 2000: USG again votes to support proposal after my presentation
  • Fall 2000: proposal re-introduced to SLSE committee
  • Spring 2001: proposal tabled by UUF
  • Fall 2001: spring 2002: student visits to departments
  • February 2002: revisions based on faculty feedback and administrative review
  • February 2002: UUF passes academic integrity policy
  • March 2002: Faculty Senate passes academic integrity policy
  • April 2003: UUF approves small revisions to wording
  • September 2003: Faculty Senate approves small revisions to wording
