Greek Judicial Boards

Fraternities and sororities are subject to the rules and regulations established by the Interfraternity Congress (IFC) and the Panhellenic Council (Panhel), as well as all university and Housing, Residence Life & Greek Life policies.

Rules and procedures of the councils are determined by each group’s constitution and bylaws which can be viewed at the Greek Life web site.  The power of the councils to hear cases and deliver sanctions is delegated by the Office of Student Affairs.

The IFC and Panhel Judicial Boards may impose the following sanctions:

  • Warning: A written warning which indicates a violation of IFC/Panhellenic, university and/or HRLGL policies and suggested future modifications of behavior.
  • Probation: A defined period of time during which further violations will result in more severe sanctions.  These may include restrictions of participation in Greek Week, intramurals, and/or social probation (no social events).
  • Restitution: A monetary payment to an individual or group for the cost of damages.
  • Service project: A community service project as a form of non-monetary restitution to the community.
  • Educational Assignment: The chapter will provide educational programming on a topic related to the committed  offense so that the chapter can learn from its mistake.
  • National Panhellenic Congress (NPC) Sanctions: The Panhellenic Judicial Board may also select from sanctions outlined in the NPC Green Book; however those sanctions must be approved by the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs or his/her designee.
  • Board Discretion: Other sanctions deemed appropriate by the board.

Chapters have the right to appeal decisions of the board.  Such an appeal must be in writing within five business days of receipt of the written decision and must specify the grounds for the appeal.  The appeal must be directed to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs or his/her designee who will review the case and determine whether to grant the appeal, deny the appeal, or refer it to the University Appeals Board.
