Dislocation
When a joint is dislocated the ends of the bones are forced from their normal position.
This is usually caused by trauma, such as a blow or fall.
If you think you have dislocated a joint:
- Get medical help immediately
- Until you receive help, splint the affected area into its fixed position
- Don't try to move a dislocated joint or force it back into place. This can damage the joint and surrounding muscle, nerves, blood vessels and ligaments
- Put ice on the injured joint. This helps reduce swelling by controlling internal bleeding and the build up of fluids in and around the injured joint
