Sprains

Ligaments are elastic-like bands that are attached to bones. Excessive stretching can injure the ligaments, which can result in a sprain. Sprains usually occur in ankles, knees and the arch of our feet. Sprained ligaments swell rapidly and they are usually painful. The severity of the injury is indicated by the intensity of the pain. The sprain will reach its peek in the first 48 hours and then improve daily. For most sprains you can treat the injury yourself by following the instructions for PRICE:

  • Protect
Protect the injured area from further damage by not using the joint. Use splints or crutches.
  • Rest
    Rest the injured limb
  • Ice
Ice helps limit swelling after the injury
  • Compress
Compress the area with an elastic wrap or bondage
  • Elevate
Elevate the injured limb above the heart to prevent or limit swelling
Call for assistance if:
  • You hear a popping sound
  • You have a fever and the area is red and hot
  • You have severe pain
  • You are not improving every day after the 48 hours
