Influenza (Flu) Vaccine

We regret to inform you that due to a shortage of seasonal flu vaccines (both local and national), Case Western Reserve University must temporarily suspend its seasonal flu vaccination offerings to students, faculty and staff.

The following opportunities to receive seasonal flu vaccinations on campus, therefore, have been cancelled:

  • Thursday, October 15 at Fribley Commons from 4:30 to 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, October 28 at the Biomedical Research Building (Frohring Auditorium) from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Wednesday, November 10 and 11, in Thwing during the Benefits Fair

Offerings will be rescheduled if more vaccine becomes available. At this point, the CDC has announced that it expects the supply of seasonal flu vaccine will be adequate to meet demand by November and December. A limited number of seasonal flu vaccines may still be accessible at area pharmacies or through personal health care providers.

H1N1 Vaccine

Information regarding specific H1N1 vaccines will be circulated to the campus community as it becomes available via federal government programs. The H1N1 vaccination will be made available first to those who are considered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be at highest risk:

  • Children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old
  • Adults 65 years of age and older
  • Pregnant women

People who have:

  • Cancer
  • Blood disorders (including sickle cell disease)
  • Chronic lung disease, such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disorders
  • Liver disorders
  • Neurological disorders (such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, brain or spinal cord injuries, moderate to profound intellectual disability [mental retardation] or developmental delay)
  • Neuromuscular disorders (such as muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis)
  • Weakened immune systems (such as people with HIV or AIDS or who are on medications that weaken the immune system)

The next priority category includes all individuals between the ages of 18 and 24, and we expect to be vaccinating as many students as possible. Additional updates are forthcoming.
