Meningococcal Meningitis
Bacterial Meningitis is a bacterial infection that invades the cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It is spread by direct contact with infected individuals and through infected droplets in the air.
Symptoms
- Severe headache (unrelenting for > 24 hours)
- Generalized muscle aches and pain
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Chills
- Elevated heart rate
- Red rash
Meningococcal Vaccine
The meningococcal vaccine protects against some types of meningitis. A single dose is recommended to decrease the risk of disease, but does not guarantee complete protection because of the variety of strains of meningitis. The vaccine has minimal side effects such as soreness at the injection site. A small percent of people develop a slight fever. If a persistent fever develops, call your health care provider.
