Immunization Information for International Students
- What is measles (rubeola)?

A contagious illness caused by a virus. If measles occurs in adults it can be dangerous or even fatal. Measles may also be know as "hard measles" or "red measles."
- What is Rubella (German Measles)?

An infectious disease caused by a virus. Rubella is not usually serious except if a woman gets it while she is pregnant. The reason men should be immunized is to keep them from spreading the illness to women around them.
- Why do I need to be immunized for measles and rubella?

It is a requirement of Case Western Reserve University. It is protection for you so you will not get or transmit these diseases to others.
- If I have had these immunizations, but I can't get the dates that they were given, what do I do?

You should make an appointment at the University Health Service 368-4539 to get the immunizations. It will not hurt you to get the immunizations again.
- I had both of these disease in the past, do I need to be immunized?

If your physician can send the date that you had MEASLES and signs his name that is acceptable. Physician documentation of RUBELLA is NOT acceptable. You will need the immunization.
- I was born before 1957, do I still need these immunizations?

You do NOT need Measles or Mumps immunization. You DO NEED Rubella immunization.
- Where can I get these immunizations?

All students registered for one or more credits hours can get these immunizations at the University Health Service by calling 368-4539 to schedule an appointment.
- Will I have to pay for the immunizations?

There is a charge. You can find out how much it will be when you call for an appointment.
- Are there other immunizations which I should have?

It is recommended that you have had Polio vaccine, Mumps immunization and be current with you Diphtheria-Tetanus. For questions about these immunizations, make an appointment at the University Health Service by calling 368-4539.
