Post-Exposure Follow-Up for Nursing Students
An exposure is to be reported within 2 hours of exposure to the Instructor
and University Health Service.
The student may choose to follow the procedure at site where the exposure
happened or report to the University Health Service for care.
As part of the confidential medical record, the circumstances of exposure and
a description of the source of the exposure will be recorded by the University
Health Service.
The University Health Service will assume pertinent post-exposure management
including medical treatment and counseling.
Any student who has had an accidental needle stick injury or mucosal exposure
to blood or body fluids will bring to the University Health Service the
following information:
- Patient's name
- Patient's hospital
- Patient's date of birth
- Patient's diagnosis
- Patient's location
The University Health Service will contact the infection control nurse at
source patient's hospital to obtain any further information on testing needed.
