Menstrual Cramps

Defined as menstruation that is accompanied by either sharp, intermittent pain, or dull aching pain, in the pelvis or lower abdomen. Since some pain during menstruation is normal, dysmenorrhea refers to menstrual pain severe enough to limit normal activities and require medication.

Common Causes

• Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)
• Intrauterine devices
• Discontinuing birth control pills
• Stress
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Endometriosis

Cramps may be accompanied by:

• Headache
• Backache
• Nausea/vomiting
• Leg pain

Home Care:

• Ibuprofen or acetaminophen
• Heating pad placed on the abdomen
• Drinking warm beverages
• Taking a warm shower
• Going for a walk
