PRACTICAL TRAINING TRAVEL ADVISORY (2/8/2005)
Effective immediately, all officers at U.S. Ports of Entry have been told to enforce a regulation that has always existed but has not always been enforced regarding students applying for or engaged in Optional Practical Training. Students must be re-entering the U.S. to "resume employment."
If a student who has applied for OPT travels after graduation, he or she must show evidence of employment upon re-entry. In other words, the student must carry proof of a job or job offer (a letter from the employer).
Also, please note the Office of International Student Services currently is advising students NOT to travel outside of the United States after they have applied for OPT until their application has been approved and they have received the EAD card in the mail. If you must travel during this time, please consult with an advisor in the ISS Office before your departure.
We understand that this is disappointing news for many of you, and we will keep you informed of any new developments. Please feel free to stop by the ISS Office to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding this advisory.
