Cleveland Council on World Affairs Global Classroom Program (2/22/2005)

A MESSAGE FROM THE CLEVELAND COUNCIL ON WORLD AFFAIRS

International Students:

  • Would you like the opportunity to share the customs and culture of your country with Cleveland's school students?
  • Would you enjoy interacting with younger Cleveland students?
  • Would you like to help northeast Ohio students understand and value your country?

If you answered yes to these questions, the Cleveland Council on World Affairs invites you to participate in its Global Classroom Program.

Your informal encounter enables younger students to "step outside" of the textbook and encounter other regions of the world on a personal basis.

The Global Classroom program allows students to:

  • Examine their own values and explore multiple perspectives
  • Discover their connections to the rest of the world . Address the concept of stereotyping and anti-bias behavior . Put traditional items in perspective
  • Discover commonalities and differences among diverse cultures

How it works:

  • Coordinate your discussion with the teacher to focus on topics the class has been studying.
  • Share cultural artifacts, food, items of traditional clothing, games, musical instruments, photos, and other examples of your culture.
  • The teacher will request a visit that coordinates with the region the class has been studying or for a special international day or international festival.
  • An informal orientation meeting will be arranged by a representative of your school.

Time Commitment:
The program is flexible and ongoing throughout the semester, and visits will be scheduled at times of mutual convenience.

Location:
Schools within Cuyahoga County; grades 3-12 (Let us know if you have a preference.)

Transportation will be provided if necessary.
