Outstanding Orientation Leader Awards

Outstanding Orientation Leader Awards for 2009 will be selected in April 2010. Winners will be honored during an award ceremony in the spring.

The following students were selected to receive the 2008 awards. Congratulations to John Horton and Justin Care!

John Horton

John is a senior mechanical and aerospace engineering major. He is a senior member of IMPROVment (Case's short-form improvisational group) and was named Homecoming King in 2008. Here are a few remarks from John's nominators:

John Horton

"This person always seemed to embody that perfect blend of spirit and practicality that is so crucial to have in a great orientation leader. He went out of his way every session and during Welcome Days to ensure that both students and Orientation Leaders were taken care of, listened to, and felt appreciated. (He even spent three hours helping a late arrival international student get his ID and purchase his textbooks on the Friday of Welcome Days simply because the student didn't know where to go.) He stepped up as a leader in the skits as well, always helping leaders remember lines and figure out blocking."

"He made a lasting impression on every leader and every student that he interacted with. His energy was continuous and brought a positive feeling to every orientation event."

"He was always fun to be around and made an effort to interact with as many first-year students as possible. He was one leader who I never saw in the "sea of green T-shirts" because he was focused on making the orientation experience the best it can be. He also had an important role in the skits, which everyone loved."

"John Horton exuded everything I feel an orientation leader is meant to be!"

Justin Care

Justin is a senior biochemistry, political science, and history major. When he is not busy studying, he serves as social chair for Delta Tau Delta. Justin is also a returning orientation leader and is on this summer's executive board.

Justin Care

Here are a few remarks from Justin's nominators:

"Every student — after three days of knowing him — could talk to him about anything. To be able to win this award, you need to be great. Past Orientation and Welcome Days, you still need to be willing to help someone in need and do all that you can to assist with a student's transition process. This person is someone who will always be there for other leaders and for any first-year that comes to him for advice — not just during Orientation, but during the academic year as well."

"This person is always inclusive and has a way of making everyone feel special. He also took part in The Cleveland Video, the skits, and helped create the OL Boogie as a dance captain. His efforts to help make orientation even greater this year were felt throughout the staff and that is why he is deserving of the title "Outstanding Orientation Leader."

"He is thoughtful, charismatic, patient, creative, and genuine. I can't think of a more deserving person for this award!"

"Justin Care was the ultimate Day Maker!"
