What Does it Take to Become an Orientation Leader?

Orientation Leader recruitment begins in the early Spring Semester, but in the meantime, please review our list of qualifications and requirements, outlined below.

Position Purpose

Orientation Leaders are asked to serve as representatives of the Case Western Reserve University Orientation program. Leaders Orientation Leaderwork with new students in small groups and guide them through their transition at Case. They are supervised by the orientation assistant director and Executive Board. They work in teams to assist with the facilitation of all Summer Orientation and Welcome Days activities.

Qualifications
  • Orientation leaders must be in good academic standing.
  • Students must complete the online Orientation leader application. Applications will be available at the end of the 2009 fall semester.
  • Applicants must sign up for an interview on Saturday, February 20 or Sunday, February 21.
  • Applicants must provide the names of two references.
  • Applicants must demonstrate campus involvement and knowledge about the university's structures, procedures, and policies.
Responsibilities
  • Provide a welcoming and positive presence to all new students, families, and visitors
  • Work with CWRU administrators, faculty, and staff to ensure a successful outcome
  • Work with an assigned Executive Board member and group leaders to promote and facilitate specific activities
  • All leaders must live in the residence halls for July Sessions I, II, and III.
  • Leaders will be assigned a group of new students (or possibly parents) and will be responsible for working with this group throughout Summer Orientation. They also will be responsible for welcoming these students to campus during Welcome Days.
  • Attend all mandatory orientation meetings and training sessions
  • Learn and perform the OL Boogie
Time Commitment

All of the following are required events:

  • Attend all three mandatory spring semester Orientation Leader Training Meetings and Classes:
    • Friday, February 26, 2010, 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m.
    • Saturday, April 3, 2010, 10 - 3 p.m.
    • Saturday, April 10, 2010: 10 - 3 p.m.
    • Sunday, April 25, 2010: 10 - 3 p.m.
  • Attend the overnight training retreat on Friday, May 7 - Saturday, May 8, 2010.
  • Work all four of the Orientation summer sessions
  • Must be able to work the entire summer session (i.e., no outside meetings or classes during a summer session)
  • Must serve as a leader for Welcome Days, Wednesday, August 18 - 21, 2010.

Potential candidates are strongly encouraged to attend one of the Orientation Leader information sessions in January/February 2010.

Compensation

All leaders are compensated for participation in Orientation. Leaders receive a stipend for spring training, Summer Sessions, and Welcome Days.  New Orientation Leaders receive $415 and Returning Orientation Leaders receive $440. Leaders also received all meals and on-campus housing during training and July Summer Sessions, plus the coolest CWRU T-shirt and swag!
