Breakout Sessions for 2009

Breakout sessions take place the first day of the institute, Thursday, August 13.  Participants will pre-select two of the following sessions to attend:

Getting Connected: Becoming Set for Life

Presenters:

  • Bethany Pope, Support of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)  

This interactive session will expose you to the numerous experiential learning experiences available at Case. This is a great session for students thinking about ways to explore and learn outside the classroom, how to gain valuable work experience, develop new skills, and begin a network of employer contacts. Get information on SOURCE, Summer Internships, Community Service activities, and more!          

Second Year Experience: Student Perspectives

Moderator: Andrew Jenkins, 2YI Lead Facilitator

Panel: 2YI Student Facilitators

Looking for insight into your second year? In this highly interactive session, the 2yi facilitators will share their lessons and experiences from their second year. They will also discuss curricular and co-curricular activities they have been involved with, such as bioethics trips, tutoring, community service, and internships, and how you can become involved with them, too. Throughout the session participants will have the opportunity to ask the panel questions specific to their interests and concerns.

Explore the World: Study Abroad

Looking for a unique opportunity to experience another country and culture from the inside? You've found it!  Learn about the exciting opportunities that await you when you study abroad. Get all of your questions answered about when and where you can go and how to begin planning for the incredible opportunity to study in another country.    

Mini-Toastmasters

Presenter:

  • Prof. Leon (Lee) Blazey, CPA, Senior Lecturer, Department of Accountancy 

A fear of public speaking ranks right up there with death and an IRS audit for many people. This interactive session will teach you some skills and techniques to improve your communication skills so that you are less afraid to talk in front of people. You will have a chance to practice what you learn during the session. You will find that your improved presentation skills will win you the respect and admiration of your peers and professors.
