ELP Mentoring Program
The ELP Mentoring Program is coordinated by the Student Leadership Journey Council. The program provides ELPers with more opportunities to develop a foundation of leadership and allows mentors to leave their mark on the Case Western Reserve University community by developing a valuable connection with its newest members.
What is an ELP Mentor?
An ELP Mentor is:
- A Role Model that will share his or her own experiences, relationships, and knowledge. The mentor's personal leadership network will assist the participant in building the foundation of his or her own network.
- A Reference that will assist in guiding the participant through the many possibilities that the Case leadership community has to offer.
- An Advisor that will challenge his or her participant to create a personal leadership journey. As the participant embarks on this leadership journey, the mentor will be there to support and provide feedback that is both positive and productive.
- A Friend and confidant who builds a trusting relationship through mutual experiences and quality time spent together.
Apply to be an ELP Mentor
The application process includes:
- Complete the online application by Tuesday, September 8
- Submit a recommendation (*optional*)
- Participate in a group interview on Saturday, September 12 in the Thwing Center
Applicants selected to be an ELP Mentor will be notified by Thursday, September 17.
It is important that all mentors are able to meet the ELP mentor expectations listed below. Please consider whether or not you will be able to meet these expectations prior to applying to the program.

ELP Mentor of the year award – 2009

Congratulations to the 2009 Modeling the Way Award recipient Alexandra Johnston!
"My mentor has helped me so much through the ELP process, and just with freshman year in general. She has been so helpful with problems related and non-related to ELP. Since we are both Nursing Majors, she was one of the most important people to get advice from, not only for me, but for my fellow freshman nursing peers as well. She has also influenced me to stay at Case and in the Nursing field, because prior to talking to Alex, I was considering transferring as well as switching majors. That was a really great aspect about Alex- she goes above and beyond what she is required to do even though she is always very busy."
— Charlotte Oliver, ELPer, Class of 2009
Past Recipients
Naveed Ahmad – 2008
"My mentor has been extremely helpful to me in exploring leadership at Case…He has inspired me with his own remarkable friendliness and sociability; I can, without doubt, say that I am a better leader because of the in-depth and highly insightful advice that Naveed has given me…he is both an excellent role model and a great friend. I feel comfortable enough to be myself around Naveed, and he has even strengthened my passions for leadership at this university. I am truly glad I was able to have him as my mentor, because I believe he was exemplary in the kind of mentor he was to me."
