Archiving Mail
Archive Location
By default, Outlook stores mail archives on your computer's hard disk. It is better to store archives on a drive that is networked and periodically backed up, so that your archives can be restored in case of a problem.
Automatic Archiving
With automatic archiving, Outlook will periodically archive mail older than a specified date. The only change that normally needs to be made to Outlook's default settings for automatic archiving is to change the location that archived mail is saved to. By default, Outlook saves these e-mails to a location that is not backed up.
To change the automatic archive settings:
- Select "Options" from the "Tools" menu in Outlook.

- Select 'AutoArchive' from the Options "Other" menu.

- Under the heading 'Default folder settings for archiving, make sure the radio button next to "Move old items to:" is checked.
- Ensure that the text below that button reads
\\cwruads.net\DOSA\Homes\xxx\archive.pst where xxx is your Case network ID, then click "OK."
- If this is not the location you see, the IT Operations Group can help you set up your archive.

Manual Archiving
Manual archiving allows you more control over which items are archived and when.
To perform a manual archive select 'Archive' from the 'File' menu.
The Archive menu presents a number of options including which items/folders to archive and how old items need to be before they are included in the archive. The only important change is to ensure that the location of the archive file is on your networked P: drive. This will allow for recovery of your archived items in the event that your computer is stolen or damaged.
