Software

Each computer managed by the IT Operations Group is installed with a basic set of software applications that are chosen to satisfy the needs of most divisional users. These applications are automatically installed and kept up-to-date. Because this is a managed environment, users are restricted from installing software on the machines themselves.

Although the initial transition to managed computers can be difficult, this scheme provides tangible benefits to the division. Because most of the workstations in the division are now tied together with common network and server services, it is important that the security of these machines be consistently applied. The current configuration attempts to balance security with user flexibility, and has been developed and tested over the past five years.

  • Drastically reduces overall support costs (part of the "Total Cost of Ownership") of the computer.
  • Protects the computer and your data from viruses, adware and spyware.
  • Ensures that the university is in compliance with applicable licensing agreements for software.
  • Helps departments to obtain new software in the most cost-effective manner.
