Alphabetization

When alphabetizing items, follow a letter-by-letter system, i.e., ignore spaces between words.

Names that begin with St. should be alphabetized as if they began with Saint. Names that begin with Ste. should be alphabetized as if they began with Sainte.

Lists and Enumerations

Lists should follow these guidelines:

  1. The first word of each item should be capitalized.
  2. If none of the items in the list is a complete sentence, no punctuation should follow the items. If one or more of the items is a sentence, each item should be punctuated with a period. The construction of the items in a list should be parallel.
  3. In some context, numerals may be used to identify them. Arabic numerals followed by periods should be used.

When items are enumerated within a paragraph, rather than broken out into a list, an arabic numeral enclosed in parentheses should precede each item.
Example: There are a number of reasons that this plan will not work: (1) we don't have the time; (2) we don't have the money; (3) we don't have enough people; and (4) we don't really want it to work.

When a list or outline with subdivisions is required, use the standard outline style to identify each item, as given below.

I. Uppercase Roman Numeral
	   A. Uppercase Roman letter
	      1. Arabic numeral
	         a. Lowercase Roman letter
