Editing Guidelines
All online edits are reviewed for compliance with university publication and
web standards. The guidelines below represent the most common corrections that
are made to pages.
If you have any questions, or feel that you can not post your information in
accordance with the guidelines, you can
send the content to us and we will post it for you.
DO NOT PASTE DOCUMENTS directly from Word or Excel as it will include
formatting that will make your information unreadable in some browsers and
accessibility tools. Use the "Paste from Word" button on the top row to
insert this information.
DO NOT CAPITALIZE more than necessary. Most items that are not
proper nouns, especially most uses of employment titles, are not capitalized,
except in special cases. Review the
capitalization guidelines for more information.
DO NOT RESIZE PICTURES using the online editor. If the picture is not
the correct size, you should resize it before it is uploaded. Review the
photo guidelines for more information.
DO NOT FORMAT TEXT. The template defines sizes and styles for
everything on the page, and should not be changed. Changing the color,
size or alignment of text will make your page look unprofessional. Do not
use return or spaces to position text. Review the text
formatting guidelines for more information.
DO NOT USE "CLICK HERE" as the text of a link. Your visitor already
knows that they can click on links, and they don't need you to tell them to do
it. See linking guidelines for examples of creating
effective links.
DO NOT IMITATE FORMATTING that you don't understand. If you do not
know how to create the proper look of a new page or page element, we can create
it for you.
BE CONCISE. The attention span of your visitors is short. Avoid
wordiness and the temptation to use the name of your department or its contact
information over and over. This information already appears on each page.
FIND PICTURES that relate to the topic of your page. One or two
small pictures (depending on the amount of text on your page) will make your
page more visually interesting.
SPELL CHECK your document before saving. Spell check is located on the
first row of the toolbar.
BE CONSISTENT. Different pages should have a consistent look, and
elements on a single page should look the same. We would be happy
to post the material in the proper format for you.
