Connecting to Campus with VPN

For security reasons, many electronic resources and services are only available to computers physically located on campus. This obviously presents problems for staff wishing to work from home. Virtual Private Networking (VPN) allows your home computer to connect and become part of the Case campus network. This gives you access to many resources as if your computer was physically on campus.

You must meet the following prerequisites in order to use VPN. If you do not meet the prerequisites, you cannot make a VPN connection to the campus network.

NOTICE: VPN service is provided and supported by Information Technology Services. You will need to contact the Help Desk at 216.368.HELP if you need additional assistance.

Windows XP Native Client

The easiest way to make a VPN connection is to use the VPN client built into the Windows XP operating system. If you meet both of the following requirements, you can use the native client:

  • Your computer is running Windows XP Professional (the Home version will not work)
  • Your Internet connection does not use a router or other "NAT device". (A router is used to provide wireless access or to connect multiple computers to your single Internet connection. If you have wireless or multiple computer connections available, you probably have one of these devices.)
Cisco VPN Client

If you are using an operating system other than Windows XP, or, you cannot or otherwise do not wish to use the Windows XP client, Cisco has client software available for most computers.
